How to prepare a 72-hour emergency kit

Don't let disaster catch you unprepared

If an emergency struck, would you be ready?

“We need to be prepared for emergencies not just at NAIT but also in our personal lives,” says Charmaine Gentles, a former emergency management coordinator with the polytechnic. “Having an emergency preparedness kit will help us protect ourselves and our loved ones."

We hope you're never in a situation in which you need to use one. But if you do, below you'll find the basic items to include in your kit.

Also consider adding important documents, says Gentles, such as

  • passports
  • birth certificates
  • social insurance cards and citizenship cards

Personalize it with comfort items such as toys for small children.

Most importantly, keep your kit accessible, as portable as possible, and check it regularly for expired food and batteries.
